A Brownstone in Eagle Rock, King of the Hilltops, and Like a Stray Cat - But Better

It has always been a neighborly thing to sit out on your porch and talk to neighbors as they pass by....maybe offer them a drink....or a piece of pizza. Well, we now share a back porch with our newest neighbor, Brownstone Pizza (2108 Colorado Blvd / 323 257 4992 / two storefronts east of CoWineCo). New York style pizza by the pie or by the slice....what more could two former Brooklynites want from a neighbor? They also serve traditional Italian pasta dishes, sub sandwiches and salads.

Want some wine with that slice? Well, until Brownstone gets their alcohol license in place, just take that slice right on out the back door and into our bar. They don't have a sign up yet but rest assured, they're there. Or if you can't find the storefront, look for the fat bearded guy in the wine store that has eaten far too much of their tasty pizza already. He'll give you directions.

King of the Hilltops

Back in May, when reviewing the Stolpman L'Avion white, we threw in a plug for an upcoming wine -- to recap: "Oh, and one more thing, he uses the lees of of this wine to add complexity to his Hilltops Syrah which is, without a doubt, the best thing we've tasted in 2007. We're told that little diddy will be bottled later this year at which point we will snatch it up and put it in our wine cooler at home and maybe, just maybe, put some up on the CoWineCo shelves.  Keep that in your cooker."

Well, a couple bottles of the 2005 Stolpman Hilltops Syrah are now safely tucked away underneath my pillow at home AND on the CoWineCo shelves for $44.99/btl.  We received very little of this so give us a call if you want one set aside.  93 pts, Robert Parker

The Goose is Getting Fat

The Colorado Wine Company Wine Club

-- The Gift That Keeps On Arriving At Your Doorstep Like a Hungry Stray Kitten...Only It Doesn't Meow Really Loudly or Scratch You Furniture...Instead....It Goes Into Your Tummy and Makes You Happy --

Some people think that tagline is too long.  That it doesn't "make sense" or "roll off the tongue" or "sound good at all", but they're wrong.  Just listen to some of these current wine club member testimonials:

"The Seeing Red wine club from Colorado Wine Company has shown me what it means to embrace life... how to LIVE... Carpe Diem." ~ Eleanor Jestigensengensen*

"I rely on the CoWineCo Yummiest Trio wine club as though it is a public utility....only it's more reliable than electricity, gas or water, and provides a greater community service."

~ Garret Portattle*

We've got three different club levels to choose from at the $50/month and $80/month levels.  Go here for more information:  www.cowineco.com/club

What a spooky Halloween it must have been when on this day in 1825 the spookiest canal to ever be built was officially openened ---- the Eeeeeeerie Canal.  Even spookier, Pat Sajak was born exactly 121 years later to terrify us with his vowel buying ways.  Coincidence?  Also, if these two bits aren't enough to get you out and sipping wine, KCBS/KCAL 9 will be coming by with a camera crew to film a piece about Los Angeles wine bars tonight.

Adler Fels Russian River Gewurztraminer 2006, California

Prius Verdejo, Rueda, Spain

Lazy Sunday Tasting

Sunday the 28th

1-4pm

$12/person

4 wines and gourmet cheeses from Auntie Em's Marketplace

Our Sunday tastings will now feature slightly higher-end wine selections. Our Friday tastings get a little too loud to discuss the wines in great detail (we're not complaining), so if wine knowledge is your grail, Sundays are the best tastings for you. Call or email Sunday for selections.

Bugey is one of the tiniest and most obscure winemaking areas in all of France so every once in awhile, we like to shine the light on this little gem.  It's pink, it's fizzy, it's subtley sweet and it's low in alcohol which makes it a hit during the Summer months, but also a great festive addition before or after a meal.  Try starting out your Thanksgiving with a bottle of this guy and even if you overcooked the Turkey and messed up the Stouffer's, your guests will be happy.  And if they're not happy, hey, more for you.

- a blend of gamay and poulsard - $19.99/btl
