The first beer tasting of 2007 is finally here, just as many of us are just starting to wuss out and turn the air conditioner on here and there. Perfect timing. This Saturday we are proud to welcome Mark Gerlach, founder of Uplifters Spirits, and the reason you will be tasting such fine beers at this tasting. In his 20s, Mark was a tennis pro in the Bavarian Alps and years later while deciding which career track to pursue, he opted to bring the fantastic, family-brewed beers of the Bavarian Alps to the U.S. of A. Thanks, Mark. Alright, onto the beers. Here are Saturday's selections (scroll down for tasting details and RSVP information):
Schoenramer Pilsner "Our pilsner is deceivingly light in color and a touch sweet on the palate...but beware, most Pilsners are 4.7% alcohol and ours is 5.4%. The aroma of the beer makes your mouth water thus tempting you to drink more and more." "One of the best beers ever to cross this well-traveled palate" ~ David Gadd, Beer Reviewer, Patterson's Beverage Journal
Hopf Helle Weiβe "Our traditional Bavarian wheat beer has subtle flavors of banana and fruit come from our private yeast culture -- A smooth, refreshing taste with Champagne like bubbles makes this beer a great thirst quencher that goes extremely well with food."
Hopf Dunkle Weiβe They use only dark malts for this brew, combined with the freshness of their famous yeast, producing an authentic dark wheat beer.
Hopf Weiβer Bock "A traditional strong wheat beer with a beautiful red and gold color -- Our richest tasting beer, with a slightly sweeter finish for sophisticated beer drinkers -- It tastes a little too good and it goes down a little too easily!"
Reutberger St. Josefi Bock Now, the holiest of beers. Established by Countess Anna from Pienzenau in 1617 through a sacred vow, Reutberger was originally brewed by nuns throughout the 17th century. In 1924,farmers formed a co-op and have been brewing the beer ever since.St. Josefi (the patron saint of nuns) is a seasonal Bock available every June from Reutberger.
Schoenramer Festweisse Ok, for this one, I had to use the mighty Google translation machine since there was no information in English. Let's see what you think: "After old handicraft art entering lozenge, flaschenvergorene anniversary white beer is expressed sueffig. Select ones Bavarian wheat and barley malt lend its amber color to it. Erlesene hop from the Hallertau round the taste off."

Hello, My Name is Cheryl We'd like you to join us in welcomingthe newest addition to CoWineCo, Cheryl. She's cold as hell, makes a lot of noise and is quite a wide load. Cheryl is our new cooler which will keep all of our beers and a selection of wines, sakes and bubblies cold for your imbibing pleasure. Most of you know we can chill anything in the store in about 5-7 minutes in our Wine Well chiller in the bar, but just in case that's 5-7 minutes too long, you can grab a selection from Cheryl. She'd be happy to oblige.

Honestly, tonight's tasting is so varied, we pretty much don't need a theme.....but we'll give you some possibilities anyway. It's Anti-Fascist Struggle Day in Croatia today so it's fitting that we're pouring our first Croatian wine. It's also Cyndi Lauper and author Dan Brown's birthdays today so go ahead and try to crack the complex code of Cyndi working with Captain Lou Albano in the "Goonies 'R' Good Enough' single for the movie Goonies, which also contained a Spielberg cameo. Wow.
Alright, we've got a few new wines that we think are gonna make you all happy campers. We tasted a fine, fine crisp Croatian white from Bibich and a Cabernet Franc from Hungary earlier this year and we finally are bringing them in. We also, after many many requests, are adding our first Cider to the mix in tonight's tasting. wines Bibich Debit 2005, North Dalmatia, Croatia Eric Bordelet Brut Tendre (Apple Cider), France Hilltop-Neszmély Craftsman Cabernet Franc 2003, Szekszárd, Hungary Bonacchi Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, Italy Terza Volta Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina

Lazy Sunday Tasting Sunday the 24th 1-4pm $12/person 4 wines and gourmet cheeses from Auntie Em's Marketplace Our Sunday tastings will now feature slightly higher-end wine selections. Our Friday tastings get a little too loud to discuss the wines in great detail (we're not complaining), so if wine knowledge is your grail, Sundays are the best tastings for you. Call or email Sunday for selections. (323) 478-1985 or info@cowineco.com
