The Bee and the Plane, This Wine Tastes Like Beef Toes, and National Towel Day

It's a short week with the holiday and all so we'll keep this newsletter fairly brief. We will be closed this Sunday, so no Sunday tasting this week.  If that makes you very sad, swing on by Saturday and we'll pick you out some wines which you can then bring home and host your own wine tasting on Sunday where you're guaranteed a seat.

Thanks a TON to all of you that showed up last Tuesday for Eagle Rock Cures, a benefit for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (especially you crafty customers that ordered wines we didn't even have in yet to increase the sales for that day).  All the participating Eagle Rock businesses raised thousands of dollars in one shopping day for a great cause. Nice job, town. Nice.

We re-arranged the store a bit with new seating and tables up front so we can show off all you beautiful people to the passers-by outside.  And, did you see Eagle Rock's own Terri Wahl of Auntie Em's on Throwdown with Bobby Flay on the Food Network?!   Fantastic.   Go here to get her ridiculously tasty red velvet cupcake recipe and see when the episode is airing next.  What else......we have new artwork up as of today by Camille Feinberg! Stay tuned for when the art opening will take place.  Here's a little sneak peek:

And lastly, a new wine poll is up on our homepage. When you taste a wine at a restaurant that is clearly corked or so damned awful you can hardly swallow, what do you do? Go to This Wine Tastes Like Beef Toes and sound off.

The Bee and the Plane

We have two new remarkable whites we're featuring this week, and both are new vintages of wines we've carried in the past. The new Abeja Chardonnay 2005 release ($35.99/btl) from John Abbot up in Walla Walla Washington and the new release of Stolpman's L'Avion Roussanne ($26.99/btl) which received 95 pts from Parker last year (and subsequently sold out in 24 hours).

When the word 'oak' has practically become a dirty word in the world of Chardonnay, John Abbott helps save its reputation with each release of his Abeja Chardonnay.  This year's offering is slightly richer than last year, but it still has the elegance and finesse to bring properly paired food up to a new level, and also wow you alone in the glass, all by itself.  Apricots, vanilla, honey and spice.

L'Avion....oh, L'Avion....you agree with my tummy. We tasted this release in the barrel a few months ago and were again knocked out by winemaker Sashi Moorman's ability to give you several levels of complexity in one mouthful of this luscious white.  Butter citrus fruit, honeysuckle, flowers, magic.  Yes, we think he added magic. Not sure that's allowed but he lives dangerously. Oh, and one more thing, he uses the lees of of this wine to add complexity to his Hilltop Syrah which is, without a doubt, the best thing we've tasted in 2007. We're told that little diddy will be bottled later this year at which point we will snatch it up and put it in our wine cooler at home and maybe, just maybe, put some up on the CoWineCo shelves.  Keep that in your cooker.

Alright, today is National Towel Day, celebrating the late author Douglas Adams and his character Ford Prefect's penchant for white bath towels from Marks and Spencer. But, almost as importantly, we're pouring a wine called Jake Ryan Syrah that has caused a stir in the 30 somethings that frequent the store with memories of Sixteen Candles and this 80s movie heart-throb (on the right) of the same name:

No, it's not the same Jake Ryan. But the wine is, as the other guy in this pic might say, very hot, very hot.

wines

Ballentine Chenin Blanc 2004, Napa Valley, California

Kite Rosé 2006, California (from Favia and Andy Erickson)

Coto de Hayas Garnacha Centenaria 2005, Campo De Borja, Spain

Jake Ryan Sueno Vineyard Syrah 2003, Lodi, California

We are closed Sunday the 27th so there will be no Sunday tasting this week. Have a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend!
