Protagonist, The Year of the Ultrasonic Laugher, and The First Tasting of 2008!

2008: Year of Ultrasonic Laugher

Happy 2008, the year of the rat.  With the housing worries, the writers' strike, and the general insanity around the globe, you might think 2008 being linked with rats is a bad thing.  But let's look at it closer...rats are blamed for the black plague, but really it was those free-loading fleas on the backs of rats that spread the disease. Rats = unwitting pawns. Apparently, rats laugh, but their laughter is on a frequency we can't hear without special instruments. Rats = ultrasonic laughter.  And finally, where would medical research be without them? Rats = brave test pilots. So, rather than throw '08 under the bus, let's consider 2008 to be a somewhat naive, but brave, selfless and jolly year (easy white house/election year/rat joke intentionally ommitted).

Protagonist

I know this is a 'wine newsletter', but we've got one more order of business that is tangentially related before we dive in. The very first customer of CoWineCo (her dollar is still on the wall) was our friend Jessica Yu.  Jessica is an academy award winning documentarian whose recent film, Protagonist, was just released in select theaters and DVD. Jessica, along with producing partners Susan West and Elisa Pearlstein, spent a lot of time in the CoWineCo bar during the development of this project and claimed that our healthy pours played a part in keeping their brains going. We were priveledged enough to attend the first cast screening and were completely blown away. Protagonist follows the stories of four men, a German terrorist, a bank robber, an "ex-gay" evangelist and a martial arts student, who all find their lives have become the exact opposite of what they had intended.  This is a tough one to boil down to one idea, so you'll just have to see it for yourself.  And maybe, just maybe, you'll see a familiar wine store in the credits.  Netflix members, click here.  Need more info?  Go here.

Christmas was so easy to drink to, but now we're back to finding holidays and events around the world to celebrate with a couple glasses of wine here in lil' ol' Eagle Rock.  So let's cheers our Burmese friends on their national day today.  Also, we'd be remiss if we didn't mention Eagle Rock's own Nels Cline (Wilco guitarist extraordinaire), who turns 26 today (you're welcome, Nels....by the way....if you happen to have any extra tickets to an upcoming show or anything...you know...I'm just sayin' is all).

Our Sunday tastings will now feature slightly higher-end wine selections. Our Friday tastings get a little too loud to discuss the wines in great detail (we're not complaining), so if wine knowledge is your grail, Sundays are the best tastings for you. Call or email Sunday for selections.

The Poll Booth -

So, let's look at the results from our Christmas movie smackdown poll.  We asked what you believed to be the best Christmas movie:  30% of you decided A Christmas Story was our finest Christmas movie, 22% of you had the RIGHT answer, It's a Wonderful Life, 13% of you thought Elf was the winnner, Christmas Vacation got 11%,  tied with Miracle on 34th Street, then Rudolph with 8% and finally Frosty the Snowman with 5%. I agree. Frosty is creepy. REALLY creepy.

On to our poll...new year's resolutions.  Let's assume EVERYONE has new year's resolutions associated with wine....have you decided to drink less?  Learn more about wine?  Ignore wine snobs?   Go here to vote --> www.cowineco.com

See You Soon,

John and Jen

The study, published June 8th in the in the journal of Neuroscience, found that the rats were given heavy amounts of red wine did not suffer memory damage when compared to rats that were given pure alcohol.  The scientists said that humans may experience similar benefits from drinking red wine as well..."
