![]() ![]() | ![]() Newsletter ArchiveThe Unimaginable Deceptive Genus, Mimes vs. Cowboys Rose Tasting, and Pay the Piper I'LL HAVE ANOTHER UNIMAGINABLE DECEPTIVE GENUS, PLEASE
Schonramer Saphir Bock - $4.75/btl As we mentioned in the last newsletter, due to a lovely mistake in our favor we are the only retailer in the United States to carry this beer. Mark Gerlach of Uplifter Spirits brought only 80 cases of this beer into the country destined for beer freaks on the west coast. Brewmaster Eric Toft has made a pale colored Bock beer from a single strain of Hallertau hops called "Saphir". So, this brewery was founded in 1780 and used to be a resting stop of travellers going between Munich and Salzburg. After tasting this beer and declaring our enduring love, we decided to look up some info. It's all in German so Google translator to the rescue:
The innocent bright color is deceptive. The intense Sudverfahren results in a very high Alkholgehalt, but this is by unimaginable quantities of the Hallertau aroma hop variety SAPHIR discreetly veiled.Schönramer Sapphire Bock is therefore one of the most unusual and enjoyable member of its genus.
You took the words right out of my mouth. Get your nose within half a foot from this glass and the aromatics kick you in the teeth (but in a good way). Thick malty and honeyish aroma with notes of lemon and boozey goodness. Flavors are all honeysuckle, toffee and malt with a gorgeous finish.
We grabbed 10 cases and we've got 9 left before it's gone.

Face Paint and Chaps Ok, we've threatened enough. It's finally time for our third annual rose tasting -- Cowboys vs. Mimes: A Silent Showdown Will the cowboy shoot the mime? Will the mime creep out the cowboy so much he descends into a paranoid schizophrenic delirium? You decide.

COWBOYS - $10/flight Edmunds St. John Bone-Jolly Rose 09, El Dorado Ampelos Rose of Syrah 09, Santa Ynez Valley Copain "Tous Ensemble" Rose 09, Anderson Valley

REGULAR WINE TASTING SCHEDULE
Friday Wine Tasting: Pay the Piper Friday, May 21st 5:30 - 8:30 pm $15/person for 5 wines + artisanal cheeses from Auntie Em's Today is the birthday of none other than Irishman Stephen B. Piper who, in 1926, collected a tithe for those wishing to cross the River Liffey in Dublin to get a drink at The Palace (the best damn bar in Dublin). The nearest bridge was out for a period of 3 months and Piper ferried people across who either didn't want to or physically couldn't (due to slight inebriation) find their way to a safe crossing. You might think that 'pay the piper' originated with the Pied Piper, but you'd be wrong. It's all about getting to the bar. Happy Birthday, Stephen. wines Verde Ca'Ruptae Verdicchio, Marches, Italy Spy Valley Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, NZ Stefano Farina Nebbiolo D'Alba, Italy Scott Harvey Barbera, Amador County, CA Copertino Riserva Negro Amaro, Puglia, Italy

The Poll Booth - Sake Ok, in the beer poll you seem to prefer doing a keg stand for Belgian Ales (39%). Well done. Let's move on to sake. Cold? Hot? Cloudy? In excess?

I have a total irreverence for anything connected with society except that which makes the roads safer, the beer stronger, the food cheaper and the old men and old women warmer in the winter and happier in the summer. ~ Brendan Behan
