Merry December everyone.  We thought we'd begin by shamelessly plugging our first Christmas present which was in the form of an article in this month's Los Angeles Magazine.  It's in the Buzz section under "So You Wanna Open a Wineshop" and very cleverly chronicles the nuts and bolts of getting our shop open. Thanks, Santa.

Speaking of Santa...he did arrive a little early at our shop so we got him a bit tipsy and while Jen made him laugh, I slipped a bowl full of jelly up on the counter just to see if the story was true.  It is.  Amazing.  Anyway, he left some wine-related toys behind so here's the CoWineCo gift list for all you rabid shoppers out there:

Gift Baskets (call ahead for multiple orders)

Gift Cards

Decanters

Sake sets

Wine Openers

Wine Carriers

Bottle Stoppers

Champagne Stoppers

Wine Away (gets red wine out of your clothes - yay!)

Wine Preservation Spray

Cheese Trays

Riedel Wine Glasses

...and, of course, lots and lots and lots of wine, beer, Champagne and sake...

Prison Break

The Prisoner is back and, in our opinions, far better than last year's hit release.  Winemaker Dave Swift Phinney has just the type of attitude towards wine we love at CoWineCo, saying, "In the end, it's just fermented grape juice and people have been making it for thousands of years. So drink up with your friends and family and enjoy your time together."

In 2000, Phinney had a Zin with too much stuffing, a Cab with not enough stuffing, and series of beautiful small lots of Zin, Charbono and Petite Sirah that represented a bottling nightmare. He threw them all together just to see what would happen and the infamous Prisoner was born. Now in their 6th vintage, The Prisoner is a Zin and California Cab lover's dream with 48% Zinfandel, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon (which really helps the structure this year), 14% Syrah, 10% Petite Sirah, and 2% Charbono. It's a cup of coffee, a bite of licorice, a fine cigar, a sip of black tea, a caramel treat, and a baked raspberry and cherry pie all in one glass.  Take it home or gift it to a friend for $30.99/btl.

Kyrie Eleison on Kir Royales

Yes, yes, we just wanted to have a Mr. Mister reference in the newsletter this week.  It's an abuse of newsletter power for sure but it's one of those perks you learn to cherish when you have your own business.  You're all going to be humming it for the rest of the day now.  Ha! HA!  Broken Wings!  Anyway, the CoWineCo bar would like to announce the return of our Kir Royale made with a pretty French bubbly and the luxurious Aqua Perfecta Raspberry Framboise.  Every Saturday from 1-9pm -- get 'em while our supply lasts!

Get On the Soul Train

Eagle Rock residents are about to get another reason not to hop in their cars and leave the neighborhood on a weekend night.  If you haven't already heard, Larkin's is a new restaurant slated to open in early '07 specializing in soul food with a contemporary twist.  They have beautifully rehabbed an old Craftsman on the corner of Loleta and Colorado near Cindy's Diner.  While they duel with the city powers-that-be to get open, they are offering private party tastings throughout December.  Here's the latest offering:
