Number 5 Is Alive, Sake Talkie, Crocodile Juan and His Merry Poodle Show

Number 5 Is Alive, Sake Talkie, and Crocodile Juan and His Merry Poodle Show

Another addition to a long line of completely necessary robots has been created, following in the tracks of Twiki from Buck Rogers, Aibo, and of course, Number 5 from Short Circuit.  Japanese scientists have invented a robotic wine taster that can identify up to 30 different grape varietals within 30 seconds ( click here for the full article).  THIS is just fantastic.  If there's one thing we hate here at CoWineCo, it's when a customer takes 45 seconds to blindly identify the wine they're drinking.  You're just sitting there, tapping your foot, rolling your eyes, wishing you had a robot around that could do it faster.  This new robotic triumph has yet to be named I understand, but we're hoping they go with Taste-Force 4000, The Merlotitron, or Gabe.

****A New Week-O-Wine 4-Pack for August/September 2006 ****

We pick 4 affordable wines a month that we think deserve more attention than they're getting, put them in a pretty white box, take a couple bucks off, and include a write-up for your educational pleasure.

Pillarbox Red 2005, Padthaway, Australia
Chris Ringland began making wine when he was a preteen. Even he says he doesn’t know why, but Chris has been obsessed with winemaking since anyone can remember. He is the winemaker at 3 Rings, Pillar Box Red, Bodegas Alto Moncayo, Bodegas El Nido (both in Spain), La Corte (Puglia), RBJ and Rockford and over the past 15 years has consulted and made wine for wineries such as Greenock Creek, Turkey Flat, and Hobbs. So, he’s really, really lazy. This wine hit the big time last year when Robert Parker gave it a 90, virtually unheard of for a wine under $10.

Dover Canyon Renegade Red NV, Paso Robles, California
New Vintage!
Forget the wine for a moment. Who’s the dog on the label? It’s Blue. In 1989, Blue rescued his owner and winemaker, Dan Panico, from a killer surf in Santa Cruz. After watching Dan’s board sweep up in the air, Blue raced up and down the beach, barking frantically. Although he had an ear infection that hurt in the saltwater, Blue plunged through the waves and pulled Dan, bleeding and knocked unconscious by his own surfboard, to safety breaking three ribs against the rock surf in the process. Dan now dedicates this wine to him. This non-vintage blend is comprised of Zinfandel, Sangiovese, Barbera and Syrah has notes of coffee, raspberry and chocolate. It’s a slight bit lighter than last year in weight, but not in flavor. If you like rich, fruity reds, It’s one of the best deals in the store, two years running.
Domaine La Bastide Viognier 2005, Languedoc, France
In the early 70’s Michel and Louis Bronzo acquired the property of the Bastide Blanche. After producing some award winning reds from the Bandol appellation over the years, they also turned their attention to producing more affordable table wines like this light Viognier. This Viognier is Vin de Pays de Hauterive in the Languedoc-Roussillon area, an area that alone produces more wine yearly than all of the United States. It’s also where you get some of the best deals in French wine today. If California was your introduction to Viognier, more than likely this is going to taste lighter and crisper, and probably spicier than what you’re used to. If this is your introduction to Viognier…you’re welcome. Enjoy.
McManis Pinot Grigio 2005, California
From the makers of that fantastic $9 Syrah comes this little diddy we tasted a few weeks back. This is 100% Pinot Grigio fermented in stainless steel, not oak. Wine X Magazine put it pretty well with this review: “It’s like suckin’ on a ray of sunshine.” We get aromas of grapefruit and lime and on the palette, citrus and pear flavors with a clean finish perfect for this seemingly endless heat wave.

See You Soon,

John and Jen

"Sometimes I reflect back on all the beer I have consumed. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, "It is better that I drink this beer and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver."
