There's a New Sheriff in Town
To follow-up on our last newsletter's focus on Kris Curran of Sea Smoke and Curran wine fame, we didn't need to go any further than her own roof. Curran's significant other, Bruno d'Alfonso, is no slouch himself. The recent history of Sanford Winery in Santa Barbara has been tumultuous at best. Less than three months after Richard and Thekla Sanford severed ties with the estate of their namesake last Fall, the majority owners, Terlato Wine Group, fired winemaker Bruno d'Alfonso after more than 20 years of winemaking service. d'Alfonso was responsible for their award-winning Pinots over the years that became huge in the wine press and a feature in the hit movie, Sideways . A non-disclosure agreement forbids d'Alfonso from explaining to the press what exactly happened during those final weeks at Sanford, but the good news is, he's continuing his small-production, side projects, DiBruno and Badge (Badge - named after the Cream song written by George Harrison and Eric Clapton). Just last week, d'Alfonso released his 2004 Badge Pinot, the first release since he's been out on his own as a winemaker. With only 100 cases produced, we're lucky we were able to grab one of the few cases available in the area. This is a medium-to-full-bodied Pinot that is bigger in the nose than on the palette. Soft notes of cherry, earth, and spice are well-balanced to make this a great pairing with duck and mushroom dishes or enjoyed on its own. This is undoubtedly one of the best Pinot buys out of the Santa Rita Hills this year. $34.99/bottle (limit - 1 bottle per household / while supplies last)
