CoBeerCo, The Lackey Wears Blundstones, and City of Hope

CoBeerCo, The Lackey Wears Blundstones, and City of Hope

***4th of July Weekend Hours!!! Sunday there will be no tasting but there will be wines by the glass.  Tuesday the 4th, we will be open from 11am to 3pm***

Beer...it's the most beloved alcoholic beverage in the world, and we Americans drink a lot of it.  Since 4th of July weekend is upon us, let us convey to you in 4th of July terms just how much beer the world drinks each year....175,000 swimming pools' worth.  So, we've decided not to be hamstrung by our name because, really, does Crate and Barrel only sell crates and barrels?  No.  Does Target only sell targets?  No.  This Friday we're putting our floaties on, breaking free of our namesake and calling adult swim.  It's CoWineCo's first beer tasting and you're invited.  And what better way to say "I love my country" than to pour 5 beers from Belgium.

We’re starting with a collection of 5 beers on Friday from Brasserie Dupont,  a farmhouse brewery in western Belgium, and Brasserie Dubuisson, a brewery in the area of Wallonia, the French-speaking part of Belgium.

Saison Dupont “Farmhouse Ale”
The best way to introduce this one, is by saying that Men’s Journal, in their “Best Beers in the World” article, rated this “The best beer in the world. Period.”  Click here for the full review.
The most ‘endangered species’ among the Belgian beer styles are the Saisons, and Dupont’s is widely considered the best of the Saisons. The breweries that make them are in most cases very small, old and artisanal... Some visibly show their origins as farms, and others speak of the small beginnings of the industrial revolution.  Because the Saison style is dry, citrusy, and very hopped, they are naturally a good match for oysters and other seafood, as well as richer fare like ribs and spicy asian dishes.

Brasserie Dupont Foret Organic Ale
"[Foret] is an unfiltered organic Belgian ale from this well respected artisan brewery, better known for their classic Saison. It has a lumpy, rocky head and a pleasing pale golden colour. The nose is a complex blend of spices and fruit- coriander, cinnamon, vanilla, pepper, figs, and a hint of toffee. In the mouth there are lots of phenols and esters adding lightness to the texture, with complex spicy malt and a subtle burning strength in the back of the throat. However, the strength is well disguised on the tongue- it is smooth and not too lively ( despite the 'pop' when pulling the cork ). Aftertaste is long, zesty, malty and spicy. This was for a long time the most interesting organic beer in the database, and is still one of the best. It's certainly well deserving of the World Beer Championships Top 10 award..."

“10 best”, Wine Enthusiast

Brasserie Dupont Moinette Brune
Also from Brasserie Dupont, this sturdy dry blown ale is in the Trappist tradition, with an herbal bouquet that indicates its well hopped character. But unlike its drier cousin the Saison, its body is fuller and rounder with a slightly sweet finish. Delicious before a meal and with foods like marinated meats and barbecue.
Brasserie Dupont Moinette Blonde
This is what this God-awful weather needs, a cold blonde ale.  The Moinette blonde is an artisinal ale from Wallonia with a golden color, fruity, spicy nose, and a full-bodied, very fruity and complex palette with sweet, chewy, caramelized pale malt. Finishes with minimal bitterness.  96 pts, Beverage Tasting Institute

Brasserie Dubuisson Scaldis Ale
At 12% alcohol, this is the strongest beer in Friday’s line-up.  Barleycorn Magazine (a subscription I’m sure you all have) rated this beer, ‘ The most drinkable ultra-strong beer in the world.’  Beers this strong are generally quite heavy and sweet but Scaldis by contrast is quite dry with a pleasant nutty finish.  Best after dinner with a rich, carmel somethin’ on your plate.  We wouldn’t recommend shotgunning this one.  It sneaks up on ya.  As their actual ad campaign says, “Deliciously Strooth, Re-Assuringly Smong.”

The Lackey Wears Blundstones

So, our friend from Blue Heeler , Eagle Rock's Australian fine imports boutique, noticed on one of our bottles that there's a picture of one of her products.  Blundstones are boots dating back to the 19th century and are known for being stylish, virtually impossible to wear out, hard to find, and absolutely NEVER, ever on sale, marked-down, or cleared-out.   Yet here they are in Eagle Rock, and featured on one of our favorite wines, The Lackey Shiraz for $13.99.  Well, for July only, if you buy a bottle of The Lackey from CoWineCo and bring your receipt to Blue Heeler, you will get 20% off a pair off those elusive Blundstones boots.  Never on sale, huh?  Unless you come to us first.

Help Fight Breast Cancer with Red Wine

We've actually made fun of certain publications for claiming that wine solves all the world's ills if you just drink more of it, but this week we received an email from one of our customers who works at the City of Hope City of Hope is an institution that is entirely devoted to researching, treating and educating people about Cancer.  Last week they released the results of a study showing that an extract found in grape seeds and grape skins can aid in the fight against Breast Cancer ( CLICK HERE for the full article).  So we HAD to spread the word, even if it seems like we're cheap, smarmy opportunists trying to capitalize off of their research to sell more wine.....which we are....but that doesn't change the fact that this is a pretty amazing report from a bunch of people much smarter than we are.  Yay for them!  Thank God they decided to cure Cancer rather than pour wine.  We'll do that part.  Proudly.  God bless America.....and eagles.

See You Soon,

John and Jen

"Yeah. OK, well, uh, we found, uh, this mouse in a bottle of YOUR BEER, eh. Like, we was at a party and, uh, a friend of ours - a COP - had some, and HE PUKED. And he said, uh, come here and get free beer or, uh, he'll press charges."
