MMmm, Delicious
Yes, we're thinking well within the box and bravely mixing literature and wine with CoWineCo's first book signing/wine tasting. Novelist and screenwriter Mark Haskell Smith will be with us celebrating the paperback release of his acclaimed recent novel, Delicious . You can get a pretty good sense of his story sensibility if you check out his website where, among other things, he explains why he loves writing - "it's an adventure, a journey, and I don't have to wear clothes." Delicious is set in Hawaii so Auntie Em's kitchen will be cooking up some Hawaiian vittles for this lovely evening and we will be pouring wines by the glass that answer that eternal, burning question, "which wines go with my Pu Pu platter?" So if you love hula dancing, cannibalism, wine and pineapples, you're gonna LOVE this event! Delicious Book Signing/ Wine Tasting Thursday, June 29th 6:00-8:30pm Complimentary Hors D'oeuvres from Auntie Em's Wines by the Glass ranging from $4-$10 Call or Email to RSVP: (323) 478-1985 or info@cowineco.com

Haggis? Well, dry bubbly is an extremely versatile pairing wine, as is dry rose. And if you just have to have your red, then most Pinot Noirs are relatively light and earthy. So join us this Friday for a bubbly, a dry rose, and three Pinot Noirs. And though I'm sure you're craving our recipe for Artichoke-stuffed Haggis, we'll stick with the lovely Auntie Em's cheese selection yet again. wines Domaine J. ****A New Week-O-Wine 4-Pack for June/July 2006 - $41.99/4-pack**** We pick 4 affordable wines a month that we think deserve more attention than they're getting, put them in a pretty white box, take a couple bucks off, and include a write-up for your educational pleasure. Cartlidge & Browne California Pinot Noir 2005, Napa, CA Born and raised in Britain, Tony Cartlidge came to California 25 years ago and founded the winery with a U.S. Navy spy-turned-securities trader named Glenn Browne. Their first release, which at first Glenn kept a secret, was a chardonnay and sold out in a matter of weeks. The resulting vintages of Burgundian varietals garnered more praise for their consistent quality and enduring, amazing value. This Pinot is of medium weight for California. Its youth shows on the nose with ripe black cherries, and nuts accented with a dash of subtle spice. Casa de la Ermita Monastrell (Mourvedre) 2004, Jumilla, Spain Monastrell is yet another name for the grape Mourvedre, better known as a blending grape in French reds from the Rhone Valley, even though its native country is actually Spain. This red is easily one of the best values we have found in months. Big, dry and bold, we get aromas of vanilla, smoke and spice with flavors of coffee and dark fruit. 89pts, WS. Stephen Vincent Merlot 2003, California A former wine salesman for over 40 years, Stephen Vincent clearly made some good connections with vineyard owners. This full-bodied Merlot is produced from a blend of 70% Monterey and 30% Sonoma grapes and is made up of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. We get great dark fruit and tobacco notes with a well-balanced finish. Definitely the best Merlot for the money we've found this year. Montpellier Viognier 2005, Napa, CA This is a surprisingly dry, nuanced and light-weight Viognier, and at an incredible price. Bright and focused aromas of rmint, hay and melon lead into clean flavors of young pears with a floral finish of roses, apricot and peach.
Your Liver and You News like yesterday's BBC article about a new study on liver disease may put The Onion out of business. I mean, come on...."more coffee may help reduce the risk of alcohol-related liver disease." A US study of 125,580 men and women over 20 years found a 22% reduced risk of developing alcoholic cirrhosis for each cup of coffee drank per day. Drinking less than one cup of coffee a day was found to reduce the risk of alcoholic cirrhosis by 30%; one to three cups by 40%; and four or more cups by 80%. Wow. Next week be on the lookout for "Study Shows that 1 Steak, 10 Hours of TV, a Bucket of Lard and 2 Bags of Cheese Puffs A Day May Be Better For You Than a Trip to the Gym."
