No Corkage at Mia Sushi!

Click here to see what the foodies over at the LA Times said about Mia.  Also, those of you that have been wondering which types of wines work well with sushi, we've addressed that question at the end of this newsletter.  Don't skip down though.  Don't.  You'll regret it.  All your CoWineCo friends will bully you at the water cooler and you won't have any defense.  Keep reading for power.

Some of you may have noticed some perty new pictures on the walls in the last couple of weeks.  We are proud to be showing local artist, Jocelyn Webb Pedersen's work for the next few months.  Come join us for her opening on the 9th (info below).  Jocelyn is a painter and fine press printer, and in her abstract paintings and drawings she uses an eclectic mix of materials, ranging from beeswax and bare wood to paint, ink and Plexiglas.  Her fine press books can be found in the special collections of Harvard, Yale, the New York Public Library and the Library of Congress.  She lives in Highland Park with her family.

DELICIOUS: A Wine Drinkin' Book Signing

We are also very proud to be hosting our first Wine Tasting/Book Signing in June to celebrate the paperback release of local novelist and screenwriter Mark Haskell Smith's novel, Delicious.   No, you're not required to buy the book to come to the tasting, but since Mark will be there, staring at you intensely the whole time you sip your wine (very possibly packing heat or that thing from Krull ), you may want to consider it.  Because Mark's book is set in Hawaii, our good friends over at Auntie Em's are cooking up some luau-style vittles.

Thursday, June 29th

Complimentary Hors D'oeuvres

"Smith writes like Carl Hiaasen's oversexed cousin... [He] excels at cooking up a supremely weird atmosphere and spicing it up with equally weird sex and violence."

What makes a great wine?  What makes a legendary wine?  Well, Bordeaux certainly has the reputation for producing some of history's best reds, and some fantastic whites.  This Friday we're focusing on the primary building blocks of Bordeaux: Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot for the reds and Sauvignon Blanc for the whites.  See how these essential and primary grapes differ from region to region (or, if you choose, ignore this and just come have a good time).

Auntie Em's Farmer's Market Dinner - Wednesday, June 7th, 2006

The crew at Auntie Em's have prepared a new farmer's market dinner for June.  Check out the menu below and our suggested wine pairings in bold.  There's no corkage fee!   Then email Auntie Em's for reservations.  They always go quickly so get a move on.  It's more than worth it.

THE MENU

Starter
Spring Onion Soup with Garlic Croutons

We suggest a dry, slightly grassy Sauvignon Blanc – something to reflect the fresh herbal quality of a soup like this.  Our Westerly Sauvignon Blanc ‘04 ($17.99) is a great one, or for a slightly more rounded flavor, our Oregon Saint Innocent Pinot Blanc ‘04 ($17.99) is also a nice choice.

Main Course
Lamb Stew with Spring Vegetables

Pinot Noir is always good with earthy dishes like lamb.  Our newest Pinot, Morton Estate Hawkes Bay Pinot ‘04 from New Zealand (23.99/btl) has a light weight but a foresty, earthy palate.    For something with a little more heft, we love our Copertino from Puglia, Italy.  A blend of Negro Amaro and a little Malvasia, this wine is a wonderful, soft, lightly tannic pairing with notes of black plum and cedar ($14.99).

or

Roasted Duck Breast with Rhubarb Sauce

We would suggest a soft Sangiovese (try our Californian Noceto ‘03, $15.99), or a Barbera (our Villa Giada ‘04 at $12.99/btl) both have light notes of berry and a nice structure to complement the tang of Rhubarb and the rustic flavors of the duck.

or

Spring Vegetable Ragout over Cous Cous with Herb Pesto (Fava Beans, Baby
Carrots, Baby Beets, Spring Onions, Fingerling Potatoes, Sugar Snap Peas,
Asparagus)

A heavier white wine such as our Conde de Valdemar ‘02 white Rioja ($13.99/btl)is great with this kind of seasoning.  It’s got a nicely herbal quality and a medium weight when drinking that would bring out the best in this dish.  Asparagus can make wines taste sweeter than they are, so a drier more snappy alternative that we love is our Fiddlehead Sauvignon Blanc ‘04, a longtime favorite at the store ($23.99/btl).  If you want to go red with this ragout, a lighter, cool-weather red such as our Australian Mawson’s Cabernet Sauvignon 2002 at $12.99 is a nice choice, as would be any of our dry rose’s, such as our Montezargues Tavel Rose ‘04 ($14.99/btl).

or

Short Ribs Provencal with Creme Fraiche Mashed Potatoes

It’s hard to go wrong with a Provence grape variety to marry with these herbs.  Any Grenache, Syrah or Mourvedre blend will be terrific – we have a nice one called Domaine de Courbissac ‘Eos’ ($9.99/btl) and several domestic ones as well.   A Cabernet Franc is also a good choice with this- specifically our Smith Wooten Cab Franc 2002 at $36.99/btl, or our Lieu-Dit Saumur Champigny Cabernet Franc at $14.99/btl.  For a darker, spicier choice, our Australian Torbreck “Woodcutters” Shiraz ‘04 ($19.99) is excellent too.

Gone Raw Fishin'

Since we had Sushi on the mind, this got us to thinking about how wine geeks love to sigh and reminisce about "My Yummiest Wine-Food Pairing", but there’s a disconnect between wine lovers and drinking their wine with sushi.  Don’t get us wrong, we love sake—(if you think making wine is complex, by they way, read a little on rice grain polishing and volcanic spring water) but after all-- if it swims, crawls, walks or shuffles, wine can be drunk with it.    So

here are a few suggestions for pairing wine with the lovely offerings from Mia Sushi.

Anything salty is lovely with some dry bubbly.  Delicious and inexpensive, a Spanish cava or a crisp Italian Prosecco is fantastic with the richness of yellowtail and salmon.  Smoked salmon and bubbly is a staple for brunch, after all.    For the same quality in contrast, we love a dry Sauvignon Blanc or a Pinot Gris with our raw fish, too, and the light citrusy notes in them make a great foil for the heat and flavor of wasabe.  Asian food in general makes a nice match with dry, lighter Viogniers and Rieslings; with their floral qualities, they are happy companions to ginger, soy and nutty dishes.

See You Soon,

Jen and John
