Ave Sangria Over 40 years ago, Sangria was introduced to the U.S. at the 1964 World's Fair and the original recipe was passed only to members of a secret Sangria society which claimed as some of its members: Carl Sagan, Madeline Albright, Emmanuel Lewis and yours truly. For only the second time in our lives, we will reveal this ultra-stealthy sangria beginning this Saturday from 1pm-9pm and continuing every Saturday thereafter until the heat goes away, or we are killed for revealing our secrets. Sangria Saturdays Every Saturday from 1-9pm Get 'Em While They're Cold $5/glass
**********This Thursday, the back bar will be closed for a private party but wines by the glass will still be available at the front tables**************

The Happiest Canyon In the Whole Friggin' World When you see names on California wines like Napa Valley, Santa Lucia Highlands, Anderson Valley, Oakville, etc., these are all AVA's, meaning designated areas that have a unique combination of climate and soil (or 'terroir') that allow certain types of wines to have a very unique characteristic. For example, we all know 'Napa Valley' for their Cabernets and Chardonnays and 'Santa Rita Hills' Pinot Noirs have become rather popular in the last couple of years. California's newest AVA in the works is 'Happy Canyon' located in the eastern part of the Santa Ynez Valley. This is a pristine area that regularly gets a good 10 degrees hotter than the rest of Santa Ynez Valley making it workable with Rhone varietals, concentrated Cabs and, my favorite, completely unique Sauvignon Blancs. Two notable Sauv Blanc producers are Fiddlehead and Westerly. Both of these subtly creamy Sauv Blancs have remarkable noses with hints of flowers and, the most apt description, lemongrass. Yes, lemongrass. I didn't make it up, but it's right on. We have accosted some of you and forced you to try these pretty whites in the past but in case you didn't believe us, we'll be pouring the Westerly Sauv Blanc at the wine bar this week for you to taste (while it lasts), and the Fiddlehead next week. Fiddlehead Cellars 'Happy Canyon' Sauvignon Blanc 2004, Santa Ynez Valley, California - $23.99/btl Westerly Vineyards Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2004, Santa Ynez Valley, California - $19.99/btl
