News You Can Use: On February 15th we turn 1 year old. It would take much more than typed letters on a page to express to you how excited, proud and honored we are to have gotten this little dream off the ground. So, on Saturday the 18th we'll be holding an all day party with cheap drinks, food and other things we've haven't nailed down yet. But you can be damn sure there won't be any mimes there. More details to come in the next newsletter.
I Heart You In Great Britain on Valentine's Day Eve, women used to pin four bay leaves to the corners of their pillow and eat salted eggs with the yokes removed. They would also write their lovers' names on paper and put them on clay balls which they would drop into the water. They believed that whichever paper came up first, that man would be their future husband. In Japan and Korea it's actually an OBLIGATION for some women to give the men in their offices very expensive chocolate. And apparently on April 14th, all those Korean men that DIDN'T receive chocolate from a woman celebrate "Black Day" where they gather together and eat noodles in black sauce. Now THAT is a party. Well men, if you don't want to find yourself with a bunch of other dudes eating black noodles and crying in your Bibimbop, then get thee to CoWineCo and show that woman in your life that you love her with the gift that keeps on giving....booze.
Nicholas Feuillatte Champagne Rose Minis - $10.99/quarter btl It's pink, it's bubbly, it's delicious and it's gotta strap that goes around your wrist (for the 'on-the-go' sipper). This is serious rose Champagne (one of our top two favorites from 2005) in a cute, bubble-gum package.
Rumball Sparkling Coonwarra Shiraz - $17.99/half btl A spicy, rich, slightly sparkling red wine from down under. It's probably the most unique wine you've ever tried and would certainly make an impression on any unsuspecting wine fan.
Rose A dry rose is always a good choice for a Valentine's Day dinner. Trust us, it goes with nearly everything and it looks pretty on the table. Crios Malbec Rose , Argentina - $9.99 SoloRosa Syrah/Merlot Rose , California - $12.99
Return of the Week-O-Wine The Week-O-Wine is back and better than ever. 3 of the 4 selections for February of '06 are new wines or new vintages we're really excited about. In case you're new to this idea, we pick 4 wines a month that we think deserve more attention than they're getting, put them in a pretty white box (if you think square and white is 'pretty'), take a couple bucks off, and include a write-up for your educational pleasure. February 2006 Week-O-Wine - $39.99 Dry Creek Chenin Blanc 2005, California Lurton Brothers Araucano Sauvignon Blanc 2005, Chile Dominio de la Peseta Roble Red (Monastrell/Tempranillo/Merlot) 2003, Jumilla, Spain Mawson's Wrattonbully 'Hill Block' Cabernet Sauvignon 2002, Australia

Skylark North Coast Syrah 2002, California - $23.99/btl This is an interesting story. Two Sommeliers, Robert Perkins and John Lancaster, from Boulevard Restaurant in San Francisco decided to make some wine. They had great contacts as the resident wine team at Boulevard for nearly 8 years and decided to jump right into the deep end having tons of knowledge, but no practical experience making wine. What began as 1 barrel turned into 14 barrels and their first Syrah was born. The fruit is primarily from the famed Stagecoach Vineyard and the result is dense, rich, fruity Syrah that lingers and puts a smile on your face. We grabbed their last case and CoWineCo is the only place you can get it in Southern California. If you miss this batch, there's new offerings to come. Due to the popularity of their first release, they're hard at work on 400 cases of Pinot Blanc, an Eaglepoint Grenache and a Caprial Vineyard Syrah which will be ready in the next two months.
Poppy Pinot Noir 2004, California - $10.99 (New Vintage) Westrey Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2003, Oregon - $17.99/btl Dominio de la Peseta (Monastrell/Tempranillo/Merlot) '03, Jumilla, Spain - $9.99/btl Decanter Magazine Bronze Medal, 2005 Teresa Raiz Pinot Grigio 2004, Friuli, Italy - $13.99/btl Torre Quarto Bottacia Nero di Troia (Red) 2004 , Puglia, Italy - $15.99/btl Michel Rey 'La Roche' Macon-Vergisson (White Burgundy) 2004 , France - $19.99/btl Gaillard 'Le Secret Ivre' Rhone White (Viognier/Roussanne) 2004 , France - $21.99/btl Domaine de Triennes St Auguste Red (Cab/Syrah/Merlot) 2000 , France - $16.99 This is a fantastic, lighter-bodied meritage-style red - light fruit on the nose with a great, spicy punch Didier Erker Givry 1er Cru, 'Les Grans Pretans' (Red Burgundy) 2003, France - $24.99/btl Many Burgundy fans still won't drink anything that isn't from Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune regions at four times the price. While they're busy, grab a bottle of this Erker and you'll see that the famed red Burgundy experience can be had at an affordable price. Pierre Luneau-Papin Muscadet Sevre & Maine (Loire White) 2003 , France - $13.99/btl Lieu-dit Les Poyeux Saumur Champigny (Cabernet Franc) 2003 , France - $14.99/btl Another delicious 90 point (Wine Spectator) red but this time, surprisingly, from France. Spain has been our darling for the last 12 months but this Cab Franc is superb. You won't find a single vineyard Cab Franc with this taste/cost profile very easily again. Mawson's Wrattonbully 'Hill Block' Cabernet Sauvignon 2002 , Australia - $12.99/btl This new one quickly joined the CoWineCo award shelf (no, we don't have an award shelf) as one of three favorite cabernets under $15 in the store. Spicy, fruity with a strangely beautiful hint of mint on the nose and palate. Roger Lassarat Saint-Veran Bourgogne (White Burgundy) 2004 , France - $26.99/btl Von Simmern Erbacher Marcobrunn Riesling Spatlese 2004 , Germany - $38.99/btl
See You Soon, John and Jen
