France's Flem Problem, Going into Labor, and Please, Throw Me Into the Brig

France's Flem Problem, Going into Labor, and Please, Throw Me Into the Brig

For this Friday's tasting, we originally wanted to celebrate the anniversary of East Tennessee declaring itself an independent state under the name "Franklin" ("Frank" for short) in 1784, but Tennessee isn't sending much wine our way these days.  So of course the obvious 2nd choice is to celebrate the anniversary of the Battle of Kassel when the French stopped an uprising of Flemish farmers in 1328.  Being that Belgium is #1 in alcohol consumption (as mentioned in a previous newsletter, they once had a drinking song as their national anthem) AND #1 in accidental deaths, those must have been some rather wily Flemish farmers.  Good job, France.

So come join us for some French wines and toast East "Frank" Tennessee, the Battle of Kassel or just the fact that it's Friday and you have survived another week of work.

****Hello, Bar People....Our Bar Will Be Closed (the store stays open!) For a Private Party On Thursday, September 8th.  We'll Have a Couple Bottles Open For Drinking Up Front For The Die Hards****

Please, Throw Me Into the Brig

So, there's this wine you need to know about.  Most people, customers and wine industry folks alike, have never heard of this odd find.  It's big, it's red, it's slightly sparkling (frizzante) and it's complexly sweet.  It has been described as: 'a whole marching band jammed into a bottle', an aphrodisiac, a life support system and simply "air."  Customers who have tried this wine so far have been known to return, walk directly to where it lives in our store without saying hello, pick it up and cradle it like a newborn, whispering secrets that we're actually really glad we can't hear.

We would like you to meet Ermanno Accornero's "Brigantino", a sparkling red wine made from the grape Malvasia di Casorzo ($19.99/btl).

This is just a completely stunning and unique, fun bottle of wine to open up in a group or on a date and with only 5% alcohol, you could drink it all day.  We get aromas of cherries, fresh strawberries, red roses, and a host of other flowers that I don't know the names of. It's fresh, fruit-driven, and totally unique.  Serve it at a dinner, follow with prosciutto and maybe some Bruschetta, repeat, then open a 2nd bottle.

Corkage Shmorkage

The fine folks at Eagle Rock's own Columbo's restaurant have generously proclaimed NO CORKAGE for all wines brought in with the Colorado Wine Company sticker on the bottle!  If you haven't been to the legendary Columbo's yet, you've missed a rare time capsule of atmosphere straight out of the 50's with old leather booths, oil paintings of scantily clad women (ok, some are not clad at all), stiff drinks and some sort of live jazz nearly every night.  Not the kind of jazz you can't tap your feet to because the time signature changes every measure, the kind of jazz built from the standards made famous by Sinatra and Dean Martin, that guest crooners from the audience can jump in on (and often do).  So come by for a Friday night tasting some week and afterwards head over to Columbo's for dinner and a stiff nightcap.
