Press Here, Sunday Whites, and The Country You Don't Cry For

Apparently you put the words "Sangria" and "Saturday" together in a sentence and people literally crawl out of the woodwork for a taste.  Ok, not "literally" because that would be terrifying, but almost.  Thanks to everyone who showed up last weekend and had us run out and mix up a second batch three hours before we closed.  We promise we'll be more prepared this time.  While this heat keeps up, we're going to keep "Sangria Saturdays" going every Saturday throughout the Summer.  Our Saturday bar hours are 1:00-9:00pm.

For the fifth straight month in a row, I am definitely not getting the much coveted "Colorado Wine Company Employee of the Month" plaque with custom nameplate and genuine fake woodgrain backing.  Jen had the great fortune (or nerve-wracking experience, depending on who you ask) to be asked on to KCRW's "Good Food" with Evan Kleiman this past Saturday and had an in-depth conversation about Summer wines including bits about Sauvignon Blancs, dessert wines, Prosecco and Tawny Port on ice.  If you missed the show, you can hear it in its entirety on KCRW's website (scroll to 10:30 to jump to the cowineco section) -->  Click Here  to listen.

Colorado Wine Company was also featured in the new glossy magazine Tu Ciudad this past week in a section entitled "Eagle Rock Has Landed", which included blurbs about other great shops in Eagle Rock such as Blue Heeler Imports, Ooh La La Boutique, Rockin' Baby Shop, Heather's Store, Imix Bookstore and Zation Furnishings.   Click here to find out where to find Tu Ciudad near you.

Sorry red wine lovers, this heat is screaming for more white wines.  This Sunday we're featuring 4 white blends from a super-dry, grassy Sauv Blanc from Australia to a semi-sweet blend of Sauv Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Ugni Blanc out of Connecticut.  Sometimes an air-conditioned, Sunday afternoon buzz is all you need to make Monday morning seem years away (Ok, that was a little cheap.  Sorry.).

Routas Wild Boar White 2004, France

The Country You Don't Cry For

Argentina has had its share of political problems in recent years but that hasn't seemed to get in the way of their wine exports.  With wine experts touting the 2002 and 2003 vintages in Argentina as "near perfect", we are getting more and more great red wines in the U.S. at affordable prices.  One old rule of thumb for pairing wine with food is if you're unsure of the specific tastes you're dealing with, choose a wine that is from the same region as the food.  In the case of Argentina, with their endless grazing pastures, we're talking about beef.  From Churasco (grilled steak) to Milanesa (deep fried, breaded beef), Argentina's Malbec grape is king.  If you haven't had Malbec, you could say it has elements of Cabernet Sauvignon (dark fruit), Merlot (round and soft) and Syrah (slight spiciness).  It is an approachable, tasty and affordable wine that you need to try with your next steak, burger or roast.  Below are some $13-and-under selections from the shop:

High Altitude Malbec 2002

El Felino Malbec 2003

Nandu Malbec 2003

See You Soon,

John and Jen "Employee of the Month, Blah blah blah" Morgan

"Can't we just get rid of wine lists? Do we really have to be reminded every time we go out to a nice restaurant that we have no idea what we are doing? Why don't they just give us a trigonometry quiz with the menu?"
