Chateau Caraguilhes Corbieres 2003 - Organic!
Languedoc, France ($12.99/btl)October, 2007 We've poured this wine at tastings a few times in the past, but like a middle child, it still demands more attention than it's getting. We've referred to it before as 'the bacon wine' showing rich, meaty flavors balanced with subtle acidity and a great twist of lavender, anise and clove. If you're into lamb and game, there just isn't a better pairing in our store for this price.
From the beginning, Caraguilhes covered an area of some 600 unbroken hectares. Remarkably, over the course of history, the domain of Caraguilhes has remained intact. Centuries later, in 1958, Lionel Faivre, an established wine grower in Algeria, took over Caraguilhes with a vision to make authentic wine with organic grapes. An environmentalist, Lionel pioneered natural farming and wine-making practices by employing sustainable organic techniques. His refusal to use chemical fertilizers, herbicides and insecticides was almost unheard of at the time. Nearly thirty years later, he completed the final transformation of Caraguilhes into full organic production.
In 2005, Pierre Gabison (bottom left) took over sole ownership of the business. With a love for wine and a genuine devotion for Caraguilhes and the region, Pierre is currently committing a renewed passion and the essential resources to the vineyard and to the Château. Pierre’s aim is to produce uncompromising quality wine from healthy vines which offer a natural expression of the domain's unique terroir.
This is a blend of 45% Vieux Carignan, 25% Syrah, 20% Grenache, and 10% Mourvedre.
