My Vino Has Been Taken Hostage

Your hosts/hostesses are great cooks who appreciate unique wines so you bring something wonderful. But when you present the wine, they thank you and put it away in their wine collection, never to be seen or tasted by you again. What do you do, if anything?

The very day I answered your poll (I was one of the aggressive types who said to tell the host/hostess to open with dinner), I un-thinkingly became that very hostess you talk about.  My guest arrived with 2 bottles and suggested we have the really good bottle with dinner.  Great.  I then forgot all about it until i noticed the bottle on the counter after they left.  I really wished he had said something and wonder if all through dinner he was focused on that fabulous bottle unable to carry a decent conversation -- or worse yet, thought I was just being greedy!

The old adage applies about not trying to control what other people do.  You gave the wine.  They will drink it one night and thank you in their toast.  Perhaps John or Jen already helped them select the perfect wine for the meal they had prepared?  Perhaps your excellent wine just had too much essence of tobacco or plum for their entree?  Or perhaps they don't like Syrah no matter how awesome it is?  It all boils down to don't try to control a party that you are not throwing.
