Hmmm... Just How Good a Friend Are You?

July 10, 2007 at 12:11 am by john

You're having friends over for dinner, you're really into wine and they're not... do you go for the nice stuff on your wine rack or do you 'dumb it down' and grab some of the simpler stuff? You wouldn't believe how much this comes up in our store. The debate is essentially, do you believe that good wine can only be appreciated by someone who has been tasting wine for awhile, or can it be properly enjoyed by all?

Post your comments here.  After the homepage poll results are all in after a couple of weeks, we'll weigh in as well.

I wouldn't say we "dumb it down", but we don't shoot the wad on friends who we know wouldn't really appreciate a higher end wine.  We pride ourselves on being good cooks and good hosts, so every wine we serve is one we enjoy, and we hope our guests will, too.  It is just we know which of our friends are of the "A 10 buck bottle of wine will make them happy" persuasion, and those with whom we can really savor a bottle of delicious wine.

The only friends I dumb it down for are those who don't respect that I am doing my best to serve them good wine. One friend of ours comes from a family where her mom always put ice in her wine. Although she knows better, our friend does it too. I don't want to waste a great bottle of wine on someone who refuses to taste it!

Well this is where Co. Wine Co. comes in handy, good wine is not expensive.  I would spend between 10-15 dollars on wine that I know I like to serve to the guests.  Frankly I would only bust out really good wine if we were only entertaining one other couple, anyway.  Then everyone can enjoy it.  We have not yet reached the "moneybags" stage of our marriage where the $50 bottles flow freely at dinner parties.

I'm with Amelia on this one. We generally have small gatherings, and in these cases I choose the wine I want to drink and think will be good with the food, not the wine I think matches my guest's level of sophistication (or lack of). If it's a big group, $15 and under is definitely the call. Here's to reaching the "moneybags" stage ASAP. :)

Wine? Give 'em beer. A decent bottle of wine may cost $15, but some of the very best beer in the world costs $8, tastes better and is for sale at CoWiCo.Just sayin'.

It's a thrill to turn people onto your hobbies and interests and a good bottle of wine has a better chance of turning your friends into winophiles than a bottle of 2 buck upchuck.  That said, I say serve the under $20 for dinner and save the Barolo for after your guests have left and you can dish on how awful her new haircut looked and was that a pimple on his lip or did he run out of Valtrex?  More Barolo for me is never a bad thing.  This is why I have no friends and deplete my CoWineCo stock alone at home watching "Cheaters" and "Real Sex".
