Bodegas Orcella Orsus Garnacha 2001
Montsant, Spain -- $11.99/btlJanuary, 2008 This is another one of those wines where our rep poured it at our bar and we all kinda looked at each other wondering how on earth this wine was so cheap. The rep shrugged and just said, "I know.....and we have lots of it." So, just like our previous featured wine (Gustavo Thrace Third Bottle Red) was the best deal in rich red we have had in a long time, if your palette leans towards more elegant reds, this puppy is calling your name.
This is 100% old vine garnacha from Montsant, Spain -- sometimes referred to as 'poor man's Priorat'. Well, I'm happy to be a 'poor man' because in our opinions, this rivals many Priorat Garnachas we've had at twice the price. Add on that this already has six years of bottle age and you've got a ridiculous deal.
Orcella’s vineyards are situated at an altitude of 400-600 meters above sea level with a cool climate and a terraced vineyard. This selection is aged in French oak barrels, and is bottled after a light filtration, allowing the wine a silky elegance wrapped in a slightly new world style. Orcella uses oak sparingly and are careful to ensure their wines express the flavors of the grapes and the “terroir” on which they are grown.
We get a nose of cherries, dried roses and cracked pepper, followed by a jaw-dropping silkiness that just spreads out in your mouth like foie gras. We don't normallly like to compare wine to really expensive food but....you get what we mean... that fat that just seems to coat your mouth evenly, beautifully, and instantly. Then, tastes of cranberry, currant, white pepper, and a little gamey touch at the end. I know what you're thinking....if you love it so much, why don't you marry it? Well, 'cus we don't live in Utah, my friend, or I certainly would.
