* SOLD OUT -- Familia Cassone Siete Cuchillos Malbec 2008
Mendoza, Argentina - $8.99/btlMarch, 2010 We introduced this Malbec 1 month ago and since then, we've gone through more cases than we have with any other wine in a 4 week period. Seemingly out of the fog, this wine we’ve never heard of before finds its way into our bar, tastes remarkable and asks for very little money in return – our favorite kind of wine. Renowned wine critic Jancis Robinson sites this as one of the 3 up and coming Argentine producers to keep an eye on in the coming years. They only began in 1999 making wine under their own name and if this is any suggestion of what other gems they have to offer, keep a lookout for more wines from the Cassone’s very, very soon.

This is 100% Malbec from the Lujan de Cuyo region in Mendoza, Argentina. Surrounded by the Andes range landscape with the majestic Aconcagua Mountain on the background, Familia Cassone holds three vineyards states southwest of Mendoza city. The two centennial ones are located in the Lujan de Cuyo area, considered as one of the best
wine regions in Argentina. Each of them has 14 hectares planted with non-grafted vines.
Along with a 1 5 years old vineyard of 45 hectares located in Agrelo, these small pieces of land provides and assures high quality grapes to achieve well define personality wine.
"Siete Cuchillos" translates as "seven knives" named after a native bird which inhabits the northern province of Mendoza. It apparently has a kickass singing voice which attracts every bird within earshot. Well, well-named Cassone family because you bottled a wine that has created its own word-of-mouth pretty fast. This is a rich malbec that packs all the traditiona flavors of malbec (smoke, spice, cigar, ash, blackberry) into a fruit-forward and balanced package. Why did we discontinue some of our higher-priced malbecs? Because this was better at half the price.
