On this day in 1968, camper/adventurer/survivalist Jamie "Chet" Whittaker walked out of the wilderness in upstate New York after being lost and presumed dead for 93 days. He later explained to the press one of the unique ways he stayed alive -- a rare, fairly unknown processof collecting lightning bugs, putting them in a plastic bag with a piece of tinfoil as a reflector and squeezing the bag to excite them, thus creatinga flashlight. He also claimed that had he not eaten fast food as his last meal, he would have had a better sense of balance and found safety far sooner.

Here's to Chet and others like him....though we're pretty sure there aren't any others like him. Cheers, Chet.
